Week One

So my internship doesn't start till June but this week I met with my mentor to talk about the overview of the class that I will be teaching. While sitting in the classroom last week with my classmates I began to wonder if maybe I can take my students to the museum and get them to incorporate social media into the visit to the museum. I was thinking about giving them a pretest to see how much it is that they really know and a post test to see how much they actually learned in their visit. We also spoke about the syllabus and what assignments the students will be responsible for.

  1. Hey Scarlett,
Can you remind me what type of class you are teaching? I'm also curious to hear your ideas about incorporating social media into a museum visit, and which museum you are planning to go to...depending on what you are doing, maybe you could come visit the planetarium!

  2. Hi Scarlett, my name is Brett. What kind of students will you have? It sounds like you will have the same group possibly for a while. Will you be teaching them indoors or outdoors? I am interested to hear your view on how social media and STEM are related. I am an advocate that pushes for students to go outside and explore rather than spending time on social media sites, which in reality, do not seem that social at all to me. With this class, I hope to augment my views upon informal STEM education, so although we have opposite opinions, I am more than open to thinking about how social media and informal STEM education could form a mutualistic relationship. What is your perspective on it?

Well, I guess I am already eating my words here- it sure is ironic that I will be achieving this goal of mine to learn your perspective by utilizing social media isn't it. Haha. I do understand that we are building a sense of community with each other by keeping up with what everyone else is doing and what they are learning. Call me old school, but there really is nothin' like a handshake and a face to face discussion to really team-build. Ahh but then I wouldn't be granted the opportunity to complete this wonderful internship all the way in upstate New York. I keep going back and forth. Goodness, Scarlett please forgive me for this novel I just wrote!

  3. Hey Scarlett,
I'm kind of in the same situation: My internship doesn't start until the first week of june and I had just met with my internship coordinator last week. I'm curious: What type of class are you teaching at what age level? What type of age range do you prefer for you students (Personally I prefer middle/high school students)?

I think you have a great idea incorporating social media into your potential museum trip. I never would have thought of that and it sounds like a good way to get the kids excited about the trip. Maybe you could incorporate a "hashtag" to your trip and have the kids participate in some kind of contest where they take pictures while at the museum and tag the pictures they want to show the class with a specific hashtag. Whoever has the most informative, interesting, or educational picture could win a prize! Maybe that'd work.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to seeing your posts in the future.
    Cheers!

  4. Hey Scarlett,

What age group will your students be? I think taking your students to a museum will be a great idea. Which museum did you have in mind? I always loved going on trips as a student and I think that incorporating social media into yours can even be a platform for internet safety(?) I know that technology and internet resources are becoming more prominent each day so giving them that experience can be really educational.

I look froward to hearing more about your students!
